  35.          test "non-DOS" hard disk partitions created by the Disk Manager or 
  36.          SpeedStor utilities, including those which extend beyond track 1023 
  37.          (on those huge hard disks which have more than 1024 cylinders).

  40.                                 Program Description
  41.          ******************************************************************
  42.          Purpose: HDTEST allows thorough READ/WRITE testing of a (hard or
  43.          floppy) disk without loss of data.
  44.  
  45.          Features: This (Shareware) version of HDTEST allows thorough, 
  46.          comprehensive Read/Write testing of hard and 5.25", and 3.5" floppy 
  47.          disks on IBM PCs, XTs, ATs, and most reasonably IBM compatible 
  48.          clones. It can also be used to test almost all DOS-accessible 
  49.          storage devices currently in use on MS-DOS-compatible computers, 
  50.          including removable (floppy and hard) disks and logically 
  51.          partitioned hard disks. HDTEST can thoroughly test the magnetic 
  52.          media on a device which contains data WHILE PRESERVING THE DATA 
  53.          (although data loss is unavoidable if an area which is in use has 
  54.          become unREADable). HDTEST normally tests the disk much more 
  55.          thoroughly than programs such as DFixer, Mace, and Norton's DT, 
  56.          because it WRITES AND reads multiple test patterns on every sector 
  57.          on the disk, and because it gets below the DOS level to detect 
  58.          errors which are minor enough to be ignored by DOS but may 
  59.          nevertheless warn of developing problems. In addition to its 
  60.          testing function, HDTEST has been reported to be useful as an 
  61.  
  62.          automatic disk repair utility for both hard and floppy disks which 
  63.          develop (especially) intermittent or persistent read errors, 
  64.          preventing or impeding their normal use. Both versions of the 
  65.          HDTEST package include full documentation on disk and a second 
  66.          program (HDCHEK), which does not write to the disk, and can be used 
  67.          to check that a given hardware/software combination is compatible 
  68.          with HDTEST.
